Campervan, Passion Project

This project stands out from the others in my portfolio. It is less finished and “polished” compared to the others, which is intentional. I want to highlight that for me, design is an ongoing, agile, and iterative process where I am able to fully immerse myself. I enjoy learning new skills and thinking about design challanges! During the full build of the camper it has been functioning as camper, allowing me to go on weekend trips during the building process.

Roof window

One highlight of the transformation is the roofwindow. To get most natural light in as possible but at the same time reduce cost of a €600 skylight. I fabricated my own frame out of aluminium and a window of hardened steel. To make sure the roowrack would not interupt the view, I took away and moved unnecesairy cross members. Asides from that I also added other windows. I could not be happier with the result.

Why make it if you can build it? Learing by doing

As student, this build has been on a budget. Not considering time it was often way cheaper to build it myself than buy it. I saw this as an oppertunity to lean a bunch of new skills and techniques. From TIG-welding aluminium, vacuum forming, pipebending to heated cooling systems in engines.

Transformation over time

During this project it has become more clear than ever how much I like to work iterative/agile. Over the span of three years this van has seen many different layouts and materials. This has become my natural way of working, making a quick mockup, test it and improve on it. This ment also that I could go on trips from day one. See the pictures below how it transformed over time
