Direct Marine Power, Pon Power
Ships that are moored have high electricity demands. Since electricity cannot be supplied by the terminal or received by the ship, most vessels rely on their onboard generators, which pollutes the surrounding air.
The Problem
Ships that are moored have high electricity demands. Since electricity cannot be supplied by the terminal or received by the ship, most vessels rely on their onboard generators, which pollutes the surrounding air.
Current ships require different shore power frequencies and voltages, leading to inefficient power conversions. This makes it challenging and costly for harbors to accommodate all ships. Additionally, AC plugs are heavy and often require cranes to bring them onboard.
The goal
Find the best way how to connect this plug to ships. (really heavy AC plug).
The solution
Switching to DC could provide a universal system, similar to electric cars. With DC, the responsibility for investment is shared between the harbor and the ship. PaXos’ lightweight DC plugs and cables enable easy connections, simplifying the process.
Socket
Socket on the quayside provide DC power. Dividing the responsibility and cost of energy conversion between port and ship.
Cable
By using the pattented DC plug, designed by paXos. Easy connection is possible due to its light-weight and flexible cable.
Management
The grid has a limited amount of energy available, depending on the location, time. To use the grid optimally this will be managed with an online tool.
Emergency backup
In some cases vessels have to moore when the grid can not supply energy and there is no other option. In that case batteries and hydrogen are the solution.
Reframing
By reframing the problem and considering the bigger picture, I identified a solution that rendered the initial challenge irrelevant. This approach resulted in a truly unique and innovative concept for the client.
Broadening scope
By zooming out and reconsider what the actual problem was new perspectives were found.
Agile design
I applied an iterative, agile design process to solve the complex problem, continuously testing, validating and refining the solution.
